PhD Student Wins Schmidt Family Foundation Accelerator Award

April 8, 2024

Congratulations to our very own Katie McMahon who recently had her research "Extreme Heat and Time Use Change Among California Farm Workers" funded by a Schmidt Family Foundation Accelerator award. The Schmidt Family Foundation seeks "to restore a balanced relationship between people and planet through two methods: grantmaking and impact investing." Their generous gift will allow Katie to tackle serious issues impacting the health and safety of farm and other outdoor workers.

Katie proposes to investigate this topic through "combining fine-scale data on temperature, humidity, and land cover with primary data on worker time use and heart rate throughout the day for a panel of farm workers in California." Furthermore, she indicates that, "this work will spotlight the risks of extreme heat exposure for farm workers’ health and productivity, with a particular focus on the potential for conservation and adaptation efforts to reduce harm."
